British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their courage," he added. "They were part of a great many UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out militants who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
