A trader earned a substantial sum on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the event.

Changing Odds in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the close of the month increased in the hours before Donald Trump stated on Saturday that Maduro had been seized.

One account, which became a member last month and took four positions, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Trading information shows that traders estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of the prior Friday.

However the odds had jumped to over 10% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the morning of Saturday, pointing to a sharp shift in market sentiment immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," stated an industry expert.

Several of other platform users also made tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule introduced on the start of the week aims to prohibit public officials from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

Market Background

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the United States, with participants able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to political events.

The industry faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. However it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting space.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
